Elliot Giles and Kate Avery to star at Trafford BMC Grand Prix

Great Britain internationals and Olympic hopefuls Elliot Giles and Kate Avery will make the trip to Trafford on Saturday for the final British Milers’ Club Grand Prix event of the season, with each race watchable live on RunnerSpace from 1245 Eastern Time USA on Saturday.

European bronze medallist Elliot Giles ran 1:45.03s at the Anniversary Games in London recently and will look to keep up his momentum before a big battle at the British Championships in two weeks time. He is in the Men’s 800m A Race alongside European indoor semi-finalist Joe Reid, who comes in following a hard-earned victory at the England Athletics Senior Championships last month.

Other talents in the line-up include world junior finalist and BUCS champion Alex Botterill and former European Youth gold medallist George Mills, along with Irish international Conall Kirk.

World and European Cross Country star Avery will take to the track for the first time this season, with this also being her first race since taking on the globe at the World Cross Country Championships in Denmark back in March.

The 27-year-old will hope to come back firing in a tough-looking 1500m A Race. Joining her will be British junior international Molly Canham, along with Amy Griffiths, a top ten finisher at the European Cross Country Championships last December.

Griffiths will look to go one better this year after just losing out to Jess Judd at the same venue in 2018. England champion Danielle Hodgkinson and BUCS winner Georgie Hartigan also feature alongside former world silver medallist Hannah England who is entered for her third BMC Grand Prix race this season. Watch out too for Elizabeth Bird, who recently ran the World Athletics Championships qualifying standard with a 9:36s steeplechase clocking, Ireland’s European under-23 800m medallist Nadia Power and Verity Ockenden who takes to the 1500m start-line for the first time in two years.

After returning home from the European Under-23 Championships with a superb silver medal, Ellie Baker leads the Women’s 800m A Race as the favourite to take victory in her first race since her European campaign.

Meanwhile, Mhairi Hendry will also look to get back to top form, as she looks to regain the fitness that got her a British vest and a Scottish title last season. Lancashire athlete Jacqueline Fairchild could be set for a competitive tussle with those two, along with Irish international Sinead Denny and England champion Kirsty Fraser, who has improved her personal record from 2:10 to 2:03 this year, having not raced in 2018.

The men’s 1500m A race contains the national 10,000m champion, Derby’s Ben Connor. The 26-year-old, who has represented Britain on track, road and cross country, has not competed in a 1500m race since lining up at this very same venue two years ago.

He once again faces stiff competition from the likes of Irish athlete and Watford winner Kieran Kelly, as well as young up-and-coming English Schools champion Ethan Hussey.

European under-18 3000m winner Thomas Keen will also be a force to be reckoned with, while Leeds City’s Italian athlete Ossama Meslek enters as the highest ranked athlete of them all this season, despite this being only his second 1500m race so far in 2019.

Laura Muir’s training partner Scot Sol Sweeney meanwhile heads an always busy Men’s 5000m A Race to cap off the evening’s action, with 2012 Paralympic medallist David Devine also taking to the start line for another competitive long distance battle.
